Which travel documents can I apply for?
You can apply for a passport or an identity card, or renewal, at the Embassy in London, or at any of the eight consulates spread over the United Kingdom. All applications need to be done in person, it is not possible to apply by post or online.

Do children need to appear in person for their application?
Yes. Everyone, including babies and small children will need to appear in person. This is also the case if you would like to have your child added to your passport.
I would like to apply for a travel document for several family members. Will I need to make a separate appointment for every person?
Yes. You will need a separate appointment for every travel document/person. If you book for more than 1 appointment on the same day, we can arrange that all applications for that day will be dealt with together.
I would like to apply for a passport and an identitycard, will I need a separate appointment for each document?
Yes. For every application, passport and identity card, you will need to book a separate appointment.
Can I also apply for a new Dutch driving licence at the Embassy?
No. Dutch driving licences are not issued outside of the Netherlands in the European Union. You will need to apply for a British driving licence with the British authorities which issue driving licences, the DVLA (www.dvla.gov.uk).

Can I have my married name in my passport?
In your Dutch passport you will always keep your maiden name. However, it is possible to have the line: wife/husband of, followed by the name of your husband/wife, in your passport. To have the name of your husband/wife added to your passport, you will need to submit a (legalised) marriage certificate.
Is it necessary for birth and/or marriage certificates to be legalised?
Dutch and European certificates (international version) do not need to be legalised. All other certificates need to be legalised or have an Apostille. For information regarding legalisation of foreign certificates click here .
Is it possible to have my new travel document sent to me by mail?
Yes. If you pay extra for special delivery (£ 5) your new passport can be sent to you by special delivery.
Can I keep my passport and/or identity card during the application?
During the application/renewal of your travel document it is possible to keep your current travel document if this is still valid. However, we will then not be able to send your new document by mail. As soon as the new document is ready, we will notify you and you will have to exchange your old passport or identity card.
Will I need proof of deregistration from the last city I lived in the Netherlands?
For the application of an identity card we will indeed need proof of deregistration. However, for the application of a passport this is not necessary.
Will I need a birth certificate for my minor child?
Yes. For every passport application for a minor until 18 years old you will need to submit a birth certificate, even if your child already has a passport. For the application of an identity card we will need this for children under the age of 12.
Can I pay by cheque or debit/credit card?
No. We only accept payment in cash or by postal order.
Please note: payment is in Pound Sterling and not in Euro's.
I have been married to a Dutch national for three years. Can I now apply for a Dutch passport?
No. You will first have to apply for Dutch nationality. You can only apply for a Dutch passport once you have been granted Dutch nationality and have attended the citizenship ceremony.
One of my (grand)parents was born in the Netherlands and emigrated to a Commonwealth country. Can I apply for a Dutch passport?
Further information about your (grand)parents and their previous and current nationality is required in order to establish if you have Dutch nationality and can apply for a Dutch passport. Please complete the nationality questionnaire which you can find under 'Downloads' on this page and send it by post with photocopies of all relevant documents such as birth, marriage and naturalisation certificates to the Nationality Section of this embassy.
I'm planning a trip to the Netherlands. Does my British passport have to be valid for three months past my stay in the Netherlands?
No. Your British passport has to be valid for the duration of your stay in the Netherlands.
