Dutch passports and identity cards contain an electronic chip on which a person's facial characteristics are stored. This means that passport photographs have to meet very strict requirements.
On 1 December 2007, some amendments were made to the requirements. One of the main changes is that photographs with a light blue or white background will now be accepted. You can dowload the new fotomatrix in English by opening the document on the right-hand side of this page. (Please be aware that this will take some time due to the size of the document. )
If you cannot open the document, please click on the dutch flag at the top of this page and go to 'eisen pasfoto' under 'paspoorten / identiteitskaarten' to view the list of requirements in Dutch.
