The Dutch higher education system enjoys a worldwide reputation for its high quality. This is achieved through a national system of regulation and quality assurance. Experience shows that people who have studied at a Dutch institution of higher education perform very well worldwide.
Great study opportunities
Did you know that Holland offers great study opportunities for non-Dutch citizens? Holland was the first non-English speaking country to offer higher education courses taught in English. Nowadays there are over 1300 study programmes available, of which 940 degree programmes and 360 non degree programmes. They provide excellent education and research possibilities that are often cheaper than the UK.
Now how is it like to study in the Netherlands? The You tube video 'Study in Holland' gives you a short, colourful introduction on the Netherlands, the Dutch and the Dutch education system. Please click on the link www.youtube.com/studyinholland to view the video.
Higher education system
Institutions of higher education in Holland are divided into:
- higher professional education (HBO): theoretical and practical training for occupations which require a higher vocational qualification
- university education (WO): focus on the independent practice of research oriented work in an academic or professional setting. University education includes both the study of academic disciplines and specialised training certain occupations.
The Open University of the Netherlands (OUNL) is responsible for providing initial courses at university and higher professional level and contributing to innovation in higher education. Courses are provided through the medium of distance learning.
A smaller branch of education is provided by Institutes for International education, which offer programmes designed especially for foreign students.
Curricula are intensive, at an advanced level, practically-oriented, and designed to meet the expectations of students seeking specialised knowledge. The courses alternate theory with practice in real or simulated work situations.
Holland has received international acclaim for it so-called Problem-based Learning System, which trains students to analyse and solve practical problems independently.
Most study programmes and courses lead to a bachelor's degree, a master's degree, a PhD degree, a diploma or certificate.
The right study for you!
There are two websites to find out what study programme is right for you. Both sites are supported by the Nuffic (the Netherlands organisation for International Cooperation in Higher Education). The website www.studychoice.nl is a Dutch comparison site for higher education. This English-language site provides an overview of all the English Bachelor's and Master's programmes offered in the Netherlands. The site also offers the option of comparing all degree programmes offered by Dutch HE colleges and universities.
The website www.nuffic.nl also provides an overview of all you need to know about studying in the Netherlands: from information about the education system, facts and figures to preparing your stay and scholarships. Printed versions of brochures and study guides may be ordered via the website.
