Theo van Doesburg Exhibition at Tate Modern
Tate Modern will host a major exhibition devoted to the Dutch artist Theo van Doesburg starting this February. Van Doesburg was the founder of the magazine and one of the founders of the movement De Stijl.
An exhibition of works by painter, architect, designer, typographer, poet, art critic and publisher Van Doesburg (1883-1931) will open on the 4th of February and runs to 16 May. Besides his own work, the exhibition will feature 350 works by around 80 other artists.
Van Doesburg, also known under the pseudonym I.K. Bonset, played a big role in the international world of art, exchanging information and ideas with other prominent artists like Piet Mondriaan, Hans (Jean) Arp and Kurt Schwitters.
Highlights of the exhibition include a series of van Doesburg's rarely seen semi-figurative and abstract paintings such as Composition IX, Opus 18: 'Decomposition' of The Card Players 1917 (Collection Gemeentemuseum Den Haag, The Netherlands), Counter-Composition VI 1925 (Tate) and Simultaneous Counter-Composition 1930 (MoMA).
